Our philosophy mirrors Robert Cormier’s quote above. We believe writing can always get better, which is where The Sound Proof comes in. We have edited the books of many self-published authors, helping them to improve what they were unaware was lacking in their manuscripts.
In our experience, novice authors set out to write their books without taking the time to consider whether they are up to the challenge. After all, writing a book takes serious commitment. And it’s not a quick process! Depending on the length of your manuscript, editing alone can take from three to six months.
First and foremost, we know the confidentiality of your work is of utmost importance. You will never have to worry about that with us. We include a confidentiality clause in every contract. Also, we prefer to work closely with our clients, giving and receiving feedback at specific intervals to ensure that we maintain the author’s intent.
Frequently, we get clients who are just looking for a “simple proofread” or a “light edit.” But we’ve often found that their books needed a lot more than a simple proofread or a light edit. In such cases, we will certainly notify you concerning the state of your manuscript.
Don’t get us wrong, we will give you some positive reinforcement. However, we firmly believe in letting our clients know if their books are not yet marketable and/or require a major overhaul! More often than not, we’ve had to do substantial work on books that were initially thought to be “ready to print.” And this is just from a self-publishing standpoint.
With that said, we love to help those who have a true desire to write a book. But we don’t want anyone to have a skewed sense of how to go about it successfully.
We offer a variety of services for those who plan to publish a book. We primarily adhere to The Chicago Manual of Style for these services, which include, but are not limited to, the following:
Proofreading (from $0.02 per word)
This service gives you a “second look” to safeguard against errors in spelling, punctuation, basic grammar, and formatting before mass printing.
Basic Editing (from $0.03 per word)
With this service, we check for spelling errors, typos, proper punctuation and capitalization, and awkward grammar. Note: When editing novels, we are careful to consider the author’s intent when checking grammar.
Comprehensive Editing (from $0.05 per word)
Our comprehensive editing includes a thorough analysis of your book, including voice, word choice, transitions, and organization.
Manuscript Critique ($500 per 50,000 words)
An editor from The Sound Proof will read your manuscript and give you a summary of its strengths and weaknesses, along with suggested improvements. Also, you will receive a complimentary edit of the first chapter. If you decide to have The Sound Proof edit the entire manuscript, we will apply the payment for the critique toward the full price of the editing service.
